Four hands, three days, one pair.

  1. 01 · CutThe upper is cut by eye from vegetable-tanned leather or velvet, with a lining of soft goat leather.
  2. 02 · Gold-workA craftsman works the gold thread with a hooked needle, flower by flower. A bridal pair takes about 1,100 stitches.
  3. 03 · SoleThe sole is stitched on with thick waxed cotton, never glued, so it can be re-soled for years.
  4. 04 · ShapeThe pair rests overnight on a wooden last. The toe gets its curl here, by hand.

From Hall Bazaar.

Stitch & Sole is a small workshop two lanes from Hall Gate, started in 2014 by a father who cut leather and a daughter who wanted flower embroidery on everything. We still make every pair upstairs from the shop: nine craftspeople, two sewing tables, a wall of wooden lasts and a lot of chai. Come in and try a pair on; we will stretch it for you while you wait.
